AS A longevity expert, Dr John Tickell thinks in the long term. He and his wife, Sue, have lived for 30 years at 53-55 Wills Street, Kew, and raised five children there. The plan was to stay until the youngest finished school, then downsize.Dr Tickell has spent 25 years researching health, wellbeing and lifespans of people around the world. He has written books on the subject and is in demand for international conferences and television appearances. One of the most appealing aspects of the Kew house, he says, is the feeling that you can be away from the hustle and bustle. "The house is on a large block of land close to Yarra Bend Park, so you don't feel as if you live in the city at all."At the front is a substantial formal dining room. What would have been the drawing room, with beautifully curved windows, is now used as a billiards room. A bedroom and bathroom are to one side of the entry and the large kitchen beyond flows into a family room that curves out to overlook the tennis court and pool. On the first floor are five bedrooms, one of which opens to a terrace, two bathrooms, a study and retreat. A separate building houses the gym and there is parking for four cars.Andrew Hayne of Marshall White has the property listed for auction on August 22 with an estimated price of more than $3.5 million.
